Olive Notes: July

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

As the summer heats up (its 102 today. . .bleh), it seems like Global warming , droughts, the price of gas and sustainability start getting more attention. The reality is that while some progress is being made with these issues there is a lot of work still to be done by our generation and future ones. We at Olive have been fortunate to have worked on the front lines of sustainability for the past decade, and this is the theme for this month.

We have worked with all kinds of companies dealing with these issues from a wide variety of angles: homebuilders, architects and designers, building material companies, restaurants, energy companies, LEED consultants and even retailers. We give a tip of the hat to anyone who has struggled with how to make their company and lives more sustainable. We have watched the public learn new terminology and being from Portland we are proud to be in one of the leading cities of this movement.

So this month, we ask you to consider ways to make your work and home environments more sustainable as we look at this issue through many different viewpoints. And don’t forget to sound off in the comments this month to highlight other companies making a difference and tell us about the things you do in your lives to be more sustainable. Olive Notes: June

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

Summer finally feels like it is here, the kids are out of school, lots of great new movies are coming out, and in business there is a lot of buzz around starting to develop the budgets for fiscal year October.

Likewise we have been busy at Olive, a lot of work that is medical related seems to be picking up as more and more companies try to anticipate the upcoming shift to a system of electronic medical records. We are also working on several drupal projects as this technology is starting to emerge as the leading open source technology platform. One of the projects involves building out a storefront for a manufacturer of pond equipment and it has our whole office thinking about building their own koi ponds this summer as a result.

This issue of Branch is all about design. Olive was founded as a design agency, but over the past 13 years we have watched design change from a niche discipline to one of the foundational viewpoints from which our now full service agency approaches every project from. We are always on the lookout for good design examples to feature on Branch so if there is something you are working on that you think is appropriate send it to us for consideration at branch@olivestudio.com . . .and as always please Click and Contribute in the comments so we know you are feeling us!

Wow can’t believe it has been a month already since we launched Branch. I wanted to use this space to thank everyone for their support over the past month, the outpouring of the kind words has truly touched Eric and I. We want Branch to be a place that entertains, informs, delights and inspires. We can’t do it alone though, if you were part of the initial 10,000 people who were in our database and received Branch, we know you have a lot to say and add to this discussion so please use the comments to share your thoughts, or email us at branch@olivestudio.com with any thoughts, posts or story ideas. You are some creative and smart people let’s see what you got! Click & Contribute.

Aside from launching Branch and Taste (our sister company’s blog) the past month has been extremely busy. Eric was named an Associate Professor at the Portfolio Center in Atlanta, teaching a class called Experience Linguistics. He also was a judge this month at The Creative Circus, and did panel critiques alongside Tim Nichols, Assistant Professor of Interior Design at the Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design. Christian gave a keynote speech on Social Media at the 2009 MTIA conference in Louisville, KY. Which we will make available for download later this month.

Social Media is booming right now at Olive so it is appropriate as our topic this month, so please check out Branch the rest of the month for more great Case Studies, Examples, Hot Work and delicious insight.
